The Harmony Built on Contrast – Vintage Chinese Deco Rugs

Art Deco was born in France after World War I on a wave of socio-artistic changes as a reaction against the soulless mass production of utilitarian objects and the general post-war austerity. However, in contrast to Arts&Crafts, Art Deco artists exhibited a particular fascination for modern technologies, geometric precision and urbanite lifestyle rather than nature or folklore. The very name of the movement derives from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes, held in Paris. The event was organized by an association of French artists known as La Societe des Artistes Decorateurs (“The Society of Artists Decorators”), with the leadership of Hector Guimard (1867-1942), Eugene Grasset, Raoul Lachenal, Paul Follot, Maurice Dufrene, and Emile Decour, some of whom were previously involved in Art Nouveau. Interestingly, the term “Art Deco” was not in the common usage until it has become popularized by  the art historian and critic Bevis Hillier in her book “Art Deco of the 20s and 30s”, published in 1968.

This style is characterized by geometric elegance and coloristic extravaganza. It harmoniously combines modern and classic elements. Art Deco furniture had to be not only practical but also aesthetic and emphasizing individuality. Each pieces’ decorative function was equally important to its usability. Many inspirations were drawn from the Orient, ancient Greece and Egypt. The times following World War I brought a great interest in modern art which has helped to spread the popularity of Art Deco. It entered all sorts of crafts, including the rug weaving.

When China supported the Allied forces, the Chinese carpets commerce experienced its heyday in Europe and North America. In addition to being vividly interested in catering for western tastes, the Chinese also found the newly born Art Deco style extremely appealing and employed it to, inter alia, their architecture. The best example is Shanghai, which represents the unique merger of the East with the West in terms of urban design. Most importantly however, Art Deco influenced the rug production resulting in a unique style which nowadays is known as Chinese Deco. Unlike its European version, Chinese Deco does not shun nature-drawn patterns as it largely builds upon ancient Chinese rug design full of figurative representations of fauna, flora, the elements, symbolic motifs and mythical creatures like a mighty dragon or a powerful phoenix. It is, nonetheless, more spare in terms of pattern density and more radical in the use of colors than the traditional Chinese design.  Surprisingly, the most famous deco rugs in China were produced between 1920s’ and 1930s’ by an American called Walter Nichols who set up his manufacturing center in Tientsin. They were usually made of wool and the finest silk thus distinguished by lush, luxurious pile while depicting exotic Asian flowers, birds and other pictorial scenes in very rich, bold colors like magenta, turquoise, emerald and ruby. Chinese Deco rugs enclose the awe-inspiring mix of the traditional and the modern, the eastern and the western, the urban and the rural within their borders. They are the wonders created of contrast but remaining in harmony just like the forces of yin and yang – seemingly opposite but in fact complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world.
